Discussion Topic: Cael - coaching tree (shrub)?
Ethan Moore added to this discussion on May 7, 2024

Was thinking about this.

The best coaches of every sport leave a legacy of outstanding coaches. You see that with Gable and Smith in wrestling. See the same in all major sports, especially in college.

Cael and PSU have essentially retained all their best talent in State College, building a program that can employ half a dozen (at least) great coaching candidates. I'm sure if we think about it we can see athletes who left to coach, but the only one coming to mind for me is Vincenzo Joseph who has bounced around as an assistant.

Cael is 44. I assume he'll stay in role at least another decade. When do others start to look?

Could Taylor be the first of many?

I definitely think we'll see more of his athletes join the coaching ranks in coming years.

I don't think this is the start of an exodus at all, though.
The core staff seems content with their lives in Happy Valley. Cody is his brother. Cunningham has been offered at least 5 premier head coaching opportunities at this point and declined all of them.

Many expect Kennedy will follow Taylor to Stillwater given the family ties there... makes sense to me. Don't think they'll have any problems filling his role.

Thanks Shawn. I think those are all assistants, right?

Compare to Gable, who only coached for 22 years at Iowa:

All head coaches:

Mike Deanna - Edinboro
Tim Cysewski - NW
Duane Goldman - IU
Tom Ryan - Hofstra/OSU
Keith Mourlam - VT
Jim Zalesky - Iowa/Oregon State
Brad Penrith - UNI
Terry Brands - UTC
Lennie Zalesky - UC Davis/Cal Baptist
Steve Martin - ODU
Tom Brands - VT/Iowa
Kevin Dresser - VT/ISU
Joel Sharratt - Air Force/Navy
Jim Heffernan - Illinois
Doug Schwab - UNI
Tony Ersland - Purdue
Troy Steiner - Fresno State

Any way, Cael is still young-ish but has been a the best head coach/program builder for 18 years. You'd think we'd see more of an impact at the coaching level. Perhaps it will come.
