Discussion Topic: Quick question for an official???
Michael Rodriguez added to this discussion on January 24, 2024

I was at dual this evening and during 2-2 bout a wrestler ended up in a single leg position…leg up, hopping on the other leg. He then leaned to the side, jumped off his one leg and kicked out the leg of his opponent scoring a reversal with an old school broomstick.

It was my understanding that this move was made illegal in the 80s. I remember getting hit by it once and the ref waving off the reversal and awarding me a point for the illegal move. So, my first question is, is that technique legal?

I asked the official after the match and he confidently said that it’s only illegal if the defensive man “kicks out both legs”. Could someone confirm this? Do I need to brush up on my rule book or was this guy full of shit?

I’m open to either scenario. Thank you in advance for any clarification anyone can shed on this.

Mike,
This is from someone WAY above my pay grade.
Jim

"Kicking out one leg as described is illegal, regardless of the maneuver."

This a garbage move that intentionally hurts other wrestlers.

A teammate of mine used it in high school (when it was legal) and blew out two knees of his opponents. One was at the state tournament against St Eds.

My opinion; never should be taught and automatic disqualification if used.

Asking for clarity, I am aware that the leg cut back is illegal, is a wrestler's allowed to do a broomstick (cutback) where there hand drops behind the opponents knee not leaving their feet to take their opponents knee out.
