Quote from Hank Kornblut's post:

"...Good enough. John Smith, Shaker Heights, ended up 3rd at 145. John was very strong and rode legs hard. His offense was lousy but if he could lock his hands around your leg, he'd finish. His favorite Td was to shoot a bad firemans, keep the overhook while on his knees, then force a short arm (sucker drag) drag. Then the boots came in. He was 0-0 at the end of the first period with Robbins in quarters but got hammered while on bottom. Then he rattled off three wins."

I've always had a special place in my heart for third-place finishers. They were always hard nosed grinders. The kind of kid who can be that close to his dream and have it slip away from him, and then regroup to win out is impressive. Look through the state brackets, and there are some bad asses who finished third.

hard to knock a 2x state champ,
I like him personally, but not suprised Al hammered him, wish Pat Berdysz would have gone up a weight class and got away from Al, that was a tough 3rd place finisher, just a tough kid who hated to loose and worked really hard.

I'm with you on Genovese. I always liked him personally too. He was funny.

Was it Pat Berdysz that "lost" to Albert from Brunzwick in the semifinals Fried's senior year? I couldn't remember if it was him or Gilmor (Nordonia) who got robbed in the semis.

perhaps of interest to readers, great article in current AWN discussing the 24 UNseeded wrestlers who have won NCAA titles. A guy from my hs alma mater very prominent on the list. Andy Daniels of Akron Buchtel & Ohio U at 118 lb in 1978 beat 2 Olympians, Gene Mills in the semis and John Azevedo in the finals. ...Daniels highest state place was 6th.

If I recall correctly, Pattie often compared to Daniels.

Jim Weir from Cleveland Heights never won state (I don't think he qualified). He was a 2x D3 champ for John Carroll and a 2x D1 All American. The NCAA Champs from other divisions were allowed to compete in the D1 tourney at that time. That's a pretty remarkable achievement.
