Discussion Topic: Lag Time Topic : Pulling the team off of the mat

For some reason or another I remembered something that happened with our team during my sophomore year of high school. Our school was wrestling at Eastlake North and the first few matches had not gone well for our school, Valley Forge. Our coach, Steve Rudo, was extremely upset with the refereeing and was letting the referee know about it. Coach Rudo was usually quite stoic during most dual meets so it was unusual to see him get so worked up. During the 126 pound match our wrestler put the Eastlake North wrestler on his back and had him there for quite a few minutes. The referee wasn't calling the pin although the wrestler looked quite flat. Right in the middle of the match Rudo walked onto the mat, said the match was over and then marched the whole team back into the locker room, where we changed into our street clothes, got back onto the team bus and headed back to Valley Forge.

It is my understanding that Rudo received some sort of censure letter from the leagues governing body but there were no other repercussions as far as I know.

Our 126 pounder said he talked to his Eastlake North opponent a few days after the meet (I think they were friends from having met in a youth program) and the Eastlake North wrestler told him he had hurt his shoulder during the match and was just lying flat waiting for the ref to call the pin and was surprised he never did.

Any other out-of-the-ordinary stories from your wrestling days you would like to share?

At a tournament in the early 2000's, a kid from Brookville was wrestling and long time (legendary in SW Ohio) Brookville Coach, Pete Chakris, was in the chair. His wrestler, who wasn't the hardest worker in practice, was winning a close match with a little over a minute left in the third period.

On restart, Pete gives instruction and kid says something to the effect of Coach, I just can't do it, my arms and legs are dead and my chest hurts. So Pete walks to center of the mat and tells the ref that his kid defaults. Ref looks at his strangely, has kids shake hands and raises opponents hand.

Dad of said kid goes crazy and starts yelling at Pete, to which he replied. Mr. (so and so), your kids said he can't do it (finish match) and that his arms and legs were dead and his chest was hurting. So, I just was protecting your son's health. Dad looked at him, turned to his son, took him by the arm and escorted him out of the gym. 15 minutes later, kid and dad come back to Pete and boy apologizes to him.

Pete said, next two years, kid was hardest working kid on the team - always responded with yes sir and no sir.

I have a good one! The 1987 Brunzwick Tournament, '88 season. It was a great tourney with names like Shawn Nelson, Robert Taylor, the Collins brothers, Mike Buddie, Matt Stout and Rex Holman.

I had just gotten done getting my ass kicked in the 119-pound final by Todd Boroff (Dublin) and I'm licking my wounds on the side of the mat. The 125 championship match was between eventual DI state champ Billy Kopp (Southview) and eventual DII runner-up Mark Prebie (Holy Name)...Obviously a high level bout.

Prebie is getting the better of Kopp when a slam is called. It was a borderline call, but not awful. Kopp appears to be fine and then (seemingly when he sees it's called a slam) takes a knee and can't continue. Boos rain down from the stands from a crowd that was into the intense match. Then, I realize it's more than rowdy fans, two men (presumably relations of Prebie and Kopp start throwing punches in the stands. Fans and parents are drawn in, coaches and wrestlers try to break it up. It spills on to the mat, poles fall down as the tumble through the ropes. It was mayhem.

Anyway, Kopp stayed down and won. He went on to be an undefeated champ that year, beating Audie Atienza who I thought was clearly the superior wrestler. Prebie lost to the great Jeff Letzner (Highland). The rest of the tourney went off without a hitch.

Back in the 80s our high school went to a weekend dual meet tournament. As luck would have it we made it to the finals against a conference rival school that we were scheduled to dual on Tuesday. The winner of the Tuesday dual would win the conference championship. It was the world's worse kept secret that the coaches did not like each other and the duals were very intense.

The opposing coach didn't want to wrestle the meaningless tournament dual match. I assumed he felt it might take something away from the dual in 3 days which was expected to draw a nice crowd. Our coach would have nothing of it. So he made every one of us walk to the center of the mat and get our hands raised. He also made sure that the table was posting the team score after every forfeit. The opposing coach was waiting for his team to get on the bus and screamed "he's not prepared to wrestle" for every kid that went out without a headgear or with his warm ups on. I think the final score on the board was 72-0 and our coach made us take a team photo with it in the background.

Colorful characters to say the least.

I can't help to think this sounds like a Wendel move, through and through! 😉😂

Well, that makes it perfect.
