Would someone please explain the byes? Most make no sense to me but perhaps there is a reason I am unaware of.

I would venture to guess Mr. Roe was speaking about the random line allocation of the byes.

And I would venture to guess they were randomly drawn in, so as to not prejudice the top seeds from potentially getting early points.

Yes. Some of them are odd for the seeds who have them. Mark Martin gets one and I would think that would be good for him.

Gilman gets one but NaTo doesn't. Good or bad? I don't know. I don't see the Buckeyes winning Big10s over PSU. Would it be better for NaTo to wrestle fewer matches and forego the team points before he sees Gilman or Mega?
