Discussion Topic: Triv Question, another tuffy
Jamie Teel added to this discussion on September 8, 2015

I paid a ton of attention that year because Dan St. John had done a camp I attended. I know four....but I cant even guess 5 and 6 so I will refrain. A much easier question, but still difficult without looking up.....who won the team title that year?

I'll take a shot at Jamie Teel's question of who was '88 team champ. Iowa State, helped by Kreiger's win over Jim Heffernan.

Good guess, but not correct. ( I believe Iowa ST. was 3rd)

i'll defer who won team in 88, however i think a clue is Jamie Teel mention of Dan St John.

Jamie if u know 4, give it to us, u can get to 5 which could at least tie for the UTB. i doubt we gonna see a "6 for 6er"

That was the year ASU won it and didn't have a champ. When Minnesota won it all back in the early 2000s, I recall people referencing the '88 ASU team. No champs, but they did have a finalist. MINN had neither and still won it. Very impressive team effort.

99% positive both Zeke Jones and John Smith were in that tournament. Not sure where they finished but they were contestants.

ASU is correct....they had 7 aa's and Zeke took 5th I think....I actually have bracket sheets with handwritten results at home.

118 - Cuvo (East Stroudsburg/Easton HS)
126 - Martin (Penn State/Danville HS)
142 - Santoro (Pitt/Bethlehem Catholic)
150 - Turner (NC State/somewhere in the Lehigh Valley)
285 - Hasselrig (Pitt-Johnstown/Johnstown HS)

I feel very confident about Cuvo, Turner (who was OW after giving up only 1 or 0 points throughout the entire tournament), and Hasselrig; pretty confident about Martin and Santoro.

I can't think of the last one, though. Maybe O'Day at 134? Maybe Koll at 158? I've seen Mayo's name mentioned but I believe that he was from Long Island and I don't believe that he was ever an NCAA champ. Maybe Paul Keysaw at 190? I think Angle won his first title in '89 or '90. O'Day probably won in '90. Scott Collins, I believe, won it in '90. I do know that Koll was a 4x AA and won it as a junior or senior. I guess that I'll go with Rob Koll (North Carolina/State College HS) as the sixth champ that year.

I don't know diddly about Pa. But '88 was the class that I came in with, at tOSU, so I do remember that we had three All-Americans that year, Mark Coleman (out of Fremont, Oh, transfer from Miami), Andrew Skove (Long Branch, NJ), and Raouf Gharbo (Worthington). Team was 9th, began a pretty decent run by Hellickson's teams over the next # of years. Do I win anything, or does my whole post get stricken, as completely and utterly non-responsive?

Deven, where are u from ? your background.

Koll the 6th yes, u win again, u got all 6-- a couple guys got 5- even 3 or 4 was very good effort. i'm impressed with the responses, very knowledgeable group, i thought question would take longer to answer.

Creates very good conversations Bob. On a side note....I've always marveled at the 1985 138lb. High school state tourney. Certain its been discussed a million times, but how many HS brackets have TWO future NCAA champs in them.......and neither won the state title!
