I've tried several times to lock this topic but have been unable to do so.

Should I delete it?

I say no. I'm not ruffled by any of this.

Plus it's off-season. A Lou Demas rant is good for WEEKS of entertainment!!!

I know quite a few members on this forum on a personal level. Nothing they - or any like them - say is going to make me dislike them. We have a difference of opinion - what's new!?

One mark of maturity is being able to get past these differences. From what I can tell, 99.9% of the contributors on this board are mature post-ers.

And if I wake up tomorrow and this thread is gone, ok. I won't stop viewing, reading, or contributing.

Quote from Hank Kornblut's post:

"Jewish women are 7x more likely to stay in an abusive relationship (this is shocking to me!). The reason? Orthodox women are under immense communal pressure to stay married regardless of the circumstances. They are ostracized if they leave."

William Shakespeare in Hamlet:
"What is wedlock forced but a hell, an age of discord and continual strife? Whereas the contrary bringeth bliss and is a pattern of celestial peace."

BobP in Cleveland:
Shakespeare can speak on any matter, geniuses get a pass. HOWEVER any posters references on this forum to anyones mother is rude & completely uncalled for, imo. If we are not civil then we have no discourse.

I enjoy reading the insights of others. Different and REAL opinions. Matter of fact and respectful, for the most part.

Keep it to one thread, and let it go is my vote.

Bob,
If asked the question, that I have a daughter who wrestles and I do not like the titles of wrestling tournament like the "Beast of the East" or "The Ironman "because they are gender bias because my duaghter neither a beast( implying masculine trait) or a man and nor should she be label that if competed either of those tournaments or feels that she has to be labeled as such to compete in them. How would others feel if their daughter or Mother are referred to as a Beast or an Ironman? Now this question has what I would consider small moral issues, are we hurting girls by making them feel excluded from a male dominant sport and with terms like IronMan or beast stealing something from their femininity or do we change the names of these great tournaments and deprive all the young men of what has become a sort of right of passage to manhood in the wrestling community to accommodate the few girls who might be able to compete at that level. This would be a valid question. Now I asked the very same type of question to a person who does not even believe that as dehumanizing as porn is at so many different levels, is even a moral issue and it seems to me that some on this forum think I may have rude or disrespectful? I will offer no apologies for not sanitizing such an ugly subject as pornography.

Right now somebody's daughter or mother is being abused in the sex trade, a black child's neck is being severed for being born live but you might have to should this thread down because somebody might get their feelings hurt!

Btw Hank,

Orthodox Jewish women suffer from less domestic violence than general population and women who cohabitate are twice as likely to suffer from domestic violence. So we're back to the model of a religious family that goes to church is the best model for society to date.

@lou

"It must be liberating for your generation to be able to send a clip of your moms latest double penetration movie to all of their face book friends to help her make money. My old-fashioned generation could not even phantom this. Past generations married during depression and recessions what your generation can save money by shacking up and who needs to make love to develop an intimate relationship with your partner when you can just have sex with them while thinking about a porno you masturbated to earlier that day . "

Dude. The mom shots are no bueno. As a child adopted and raised by my grandparents, I can't even "phantom" how you could think saying something like that was at all persuasive or even productive in our conversation. No one here is downplaying the harm caused by the sex trade and sex slave industry. You can certainly have an educated opinion on the issues at hand. But we weren't even talking about the treatment of those in the sex trade. That's an entirely separate issue. I can seriously assure you that my generation has its fair share of intimate relationships. Where do you even get this about us just "having sex and thinking about a porno we masturbated to earlier that day"? I can assure you that is most certainly not the case. Our generation can save money by shacking up? Heck, most of my peers are forced to live at home because even if they "shack up", they still wouldn't be able to afford the cost of living combined with student loan debt. I'm not sure whether you just personally interact with a very specific group of millennials or what, but I can, again, assure you that is not the case.

Full circle time.

What are the differences between the Baltimore riots, that just happened, and the Hough riots that occurred 50 years earlier?

Threads of this type are seldom good for the general health of the forum.

I have seen threads like this drive off the quieter, less participatory, members on other forums who never express their displeasure with the subject matter but just stop visiting quite as much.

Bruce, out of curiosity, if the people are quiet and don't express their displeasure, how do you know what the reasons are that they stop visiting as much? And if they don't participate much, how do you know that they are gone? Genuinely asking.

Personally I think this is ok because it's contained. A thread like this might pop up every now and then, but the conversation generally stays contained to those threads.

Ben,

As you say, a well contained off-topic thread is usually not too much of a problem as long as the strong viewpoints do not start tainting the forum threads as a whole.

Naturally, it is difficult to establish with scientific certainty the exact cause of a forum's decline. I can discuss two examples. One is themat.com which I have been reading for over ten years (but have never posted). During that time I have observed that a number of soft spoken thoughtful posters have essentially stopped participating there. I attribute it to the general "wild west" atmosphere that pervades that forum, which includes personal attacks and trolling.

The other example is a bit more scientific. Two flying forums I have participated in had good moderators for a number of years that kept the political and religious discussions well contained and the personal attacks well controlled. Eventually, on both forums (one for Pipers and one for Cessnas) the moderators basically stopped doing their job and a number of people expressed dismay with what the forums were becoming. Some members created new forums and pilots migrated to the new forums which were more tightly moderated. The membership in the Piper forum dried up completely and I am not sure it is still operating. The Cessna forum, which is still operating, is down by about 20% in participation, based on a study of thread view counts I performed.

Bruce

Bruce: did you just lower the status of the #DotNet to that of your average, run-of-the-mill forum!?!?!?! GASP!!!!!!! ...tsk, tsk, Bruce. I thought you knew better.

I make a motion to suspend Bruce's posting rights for 1 minute, to be served immediately after he reads this post. (Self-imposed if necessary.)

I, for one, understand the issue, but am genuinely interested in other's opinions. If I didn't know Lou personally, and LOOSELY understand his point-making process, I would think he came dangerously close to a personal attack. But I know Lou, and his round-about ways, and understand what he is/was trying to point out.

Recently, I heard an argument for 100% open borders. It challenged my normal way of thinking and stretched me to view things from a different perspective. I enjoyed it and it caused me to pause and reevaluate my position. If that can happen within this community, with this forum as the vehicle, I will praise it all the more!!! But I do agree that discussions should be about perspective and not about personal attacks, and be minimal. (Go back to page #108 and read all the way back to page #1. This might be one of a handful of thousands of threads to broach a subject like this. Just saying.)

Brandon,

If a pro football player was asked a question like this; You played in Big Tens championships, you played in National Championship and in the Superbowl but knowing what we know about concussions right now, would you let your children play football. No one on this forum or anywhere else in U.S would give this question a second thought. Now I did not try to specifically mention anyone's mom just the fact that your generation would be okay with that, because pornography is not a moral issue according to you.If pornography truly is a non issue to your generation you would have to look at my question in the same light the football player would, as a legitimate question.
Now if you took offense to any of my questions or statements then your indicateing it is a moral is issue for your generation and that does give me some hope for your generation .
Please understand I've see first hand what the adult entertainment business does to young girls and the effects of abortion the inner city, it not pretty. Your contemplating a hypothetical question and feeling uncomfortable about it,pales in comparison to what they experience.
I know you would like to believe your secular world view is the educated one but statistic after statistic and science has shown that religion provides a better quality of life. A secular world view as educated as it may seem to you has not found an alternative. People blame politicians but they don't have to vote for or they blame corporations they don't have to by their goods but not themselves
Just compare the legacy Gandhi and Martin Luther King to that Marx and Engel. Religion even with all the evil thats been done in its name, pales in comparison to the body count of those who have reduced humans to animals. Interesting note Russian is now turning back to its Orthodox roots.
Maybe they learned something that we may need a few more riots to remind us.

-----------------------------------

None.

the so-called president of hope & change, what'd he change? Where was his AG Eric Holder on this matter? A little easier to scold Jefferson Mo. officials than to take on JP Morgan Chase.

Reported today:
Five of the world's biggest banks have agreed to pay more than $5 billion in fines and plead guilty to rigging global financial markets. On Wednesday, the Justice Department said Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase, Barclays, and the Royal Bank of Scotland will plead guilty to violating antitrust laws for traders who worked together to rig "the largest and yet least regulated market in the financial world, where some $5 trillion changes hands every day," as the New York Times puts it. (The traders called themselves "the cartel.")

UBS will plead guilty to manipulating a rate known as LIBOR that sets the cost of trillions of dollars worth of loans like credit cards. NO ONE was indicted for criminal prosecution, though.
