Vikings beat Rider today 21-16. They wrestle Bloomsburg at home next Saturday at 1pm. If they win that dual, they lock up 2nd place in the EWL.

It would be nice to see a crowd at Woodling Gym to support the Vikes.

What a difference a couple quality wrestlers make for their lineup. Glad CSU is holding their own in conference.

Kudos to Ben Stehura and his coaching staff. It's not easy to win at CSU. Hope they can build off of this year's success.

its been a loooooooong 6 or 7 years, so im not sure kudos in order yet, however we will gladly take this nice win as a sign hopefully.

...from my high school rankings days i can tell u JR WERT who Willeford majored was an outstanding hs wrestler at Christiansburg VA maybe 2 years ago, won Beast of the East as i recall.
...DEUTSCH was equally outstanding in high school circles a few years ago in NJ, he too may have won the Beast. So these were quality wins indeed by the 2 CSU kids.

The lesson for CSU should be the importance of landing a couple quality recruits every year.

What do you mean?

Brandon--Here's what I mean.

You have two guys in your lineup that are around top 20 caliber. They're both dominant within your conference. The rest of your lineup is not the same skill level. But when in duals with Lock Haven, Clarion, George Mason, Rider, EMU, Bloomsburg, etc...having two studs that will win every time has made all the difference.

Looking at your current roster, who will step in and wrestle close to the level of these two once they graduate?

I'm glad CSU is having a better season. Beating bad teams is a start and credit is due because for five years, CSU didn't win a conference dual. But will this upswing continue? My feeling is that there needs to be more emphasis on landing recruits who can have a lot of success in D1. Until this happens more consistently, I think challenging for 2nd place in a downtrodden conference is the best one can expect.

To add to your point, I think having the dominant wrestlers at the lowest and highest weight is both rare and very advantageous. It is easier to have depth at the middle weights.

I was just confused by you saying that CSU needed to learn the lesson since they are the ones you are describing as having followed that model to begin with.

I try to stay realistic. I'm sure Coach Stehura would love to welcome Mark Hall or Spencer Lee to CSU. While it is obviously a long term goal to get to the point where that is a possibility, it is clearly unrealistic to expect that high quality of a recruit. In lieu of that, I think the coaching staff has done a great job of recruiting kids who have wrestling talent...but moreso who have the desire to be the best. In the last 5 years that I have been around, there has been a dramatic shift in the locker room attitude from apathy to desire. You can teach wrestling skills (which our coaching staff is FANTASTIC at, imo)...but you can't teach desire. I remember a few years ago someone posted on here and said CSU didn't have any D1 quality wrestlers on the roster. That turned out to be untrue.

I know I've spoken to it before, but CSU has many obstacles in the way of recruiting. The perception of our school, poor support from the athletic department, poor funding, etc. I'm sure it gets annoying for y'all, but I will continue to defend Coach Stehura because of the immense amount of respect I have for him and what he has done for the program. I realize y'all don't get the privilege of seeing the innerworkings like I do so I always try to share my perspective.

Daaaaaaaaaaaang!!!!! ...was my first thought.

Then I remembered something about Buffalo being under some type of NCAA sanction.

But great win nonetheless.
