Discussion Topic: Iowa in 2014-2015

I'm more in the IA "won't" win an NCAA title -- unless they have 10 AA's. Top end firepower wins more often than team balance. MN, tOSU, and OkSU have more guys that can beat almost everybody in nation than IA does. Duals are built more for IA as momentum gets rolling -- something that I honestly don't see happening for them in St. Louis.

I agree w/ you here. Outside of Evans, who on the Iowa roster can you consider a REAL threat to make the finals? You could argue their 285 might do it, but that's a deep weight class this year so I wouldn't hang my hat on that one. They very well might win national duals, but I don't think Gilman has the offense to get above 5th at NCAAs, Clark will be in a fight just to place, Dziewa...who knows, Kelly doesn't look like an AA to me, Moore looks like a Rd of 12 to me as well, Evans might be a finalist but I'm not betting money on that...I think 3rd(ish) is more likely, Brooks looks like a 5th place kind of wrestler...maybe, Burak also doesn't strike me as a finalist...perhaps a 5th placer also and their 285 looks more like a 3rd/4th placer at best. In the end, Iowa might be "in the hunt" but w/out the top end fire power and bonus points guys like McDonough, Metcalf, Keddy, guys like that they simply won't keep pace w/ teams like Minnesota.

Hawks have six guys who I see as significant AA possibilities. Telford and Evans have reasonable finalist potential. Wildcard is Nick Moore--a good wrestler who looks lost at the moment.

I'd say their squad has a similar makeup to the Buckeyes although Ohio State has more high end scoring potential. In fact, if the Bucks win it--and they are in the thick of it in spite of the dual losses--it will likely be bonus points that make the difference.

I think back to what allowed Iowa to win the title over the Bucks the 2nd time tOSU finished 2nd and it was the performance of the guys on the back side of the bracket. Iowa had an amazing performance from the guys in the consolation rounds that simply brought it home for them. Despite only having Metcalf in the finals (which he would lose to Caldwell), Iowa still grinded out quite a few AA's. Lady Luck was also on their side as they received a few medical forfeits in rounds where they wouldn't have gotten bonus points.
The biggest difference I noticed looking at the brackets from that year and comparing them to what we project will go on this year is there wasn't a team that put multiple guys in the finals outside of the Buckeyes and Nebraska (who wasn't a major threat then). Minnesota was a bit down that year and I don't think had a single finalist. Had there been another team w/ multiple finalists Iowa would not have won that title. In short, THIS YEAR I don't think Iowa can get away with having 1 finalist (but no champ) and still walk away with the title. There are 2 or 3 other teams that will be able to keep pace with them or pass them simply because of their top end strength and bonus point scorers.

It seems Bo makes everyone look lost once he puts those heavy hands on them.
