Discussion Topic: Question for Dano
Pat Altvater added to this discussion on October 4, 2014

Quote from Bob Preusse's post:

"Pat,
i have no knowledge as to who gets what in scholarship money or any type of money, i merely stated the situation as i understand it to be from various sources. ...s/BobP"

Just for the sake of asking the question, since the university is a public institution, is it public information posted somewhere how much scholarship aid is given and to whom?

Bob: Bucks will need someone else in the 174-184 range besides Myles Martin. And another 125 is vital. Bucks losing Roberts hurts because they have no one to step in and wrestle competitively when NaTo can't go.

I would assume that would all fall under student privacy protection acts.

Back to the question of whom Ohio State should recruit next...

A lot depends on the development of wrestlers currently in the room. Among true frosh, Micah J, Haines and Snyder come in with credentials. Can a Seth Williams or a Ryan Harris show enough development to become a potential starter? Same for Jake Ryan and JP Newton. Harris in particular was a real stud in high school. Will Cody Burcher develop into a quality lower wt? Staff's sense of these wrestlers and how they might develop may influence which weights the Bucks next recruit.

Aside: What happened to Aaron Adkins? At one point, he was announced as an Ohio State recruit. Not on roster.

Mark Hall? Spencer Lee? It's nice to see that Ohio State will be targeting those #1 in the nation OOS type recruits. A tall order of course, but if the team can get over the hump and join the other elites with a National Championship, it'll go a long way to putting that idea in recruits heads. As stated before, some of these kids will take hits on scholarship money or are willing to burn eligibility if they can go on and get that team to the podium.

Does anyone have any idea as to whether TOSU has or will apply for an injury redshirt for Josh Demas for last year or if he is interested in returning for a fourth year of eligibility.
Also, I was under the impression that Bo was getting big and that he might end up at 174 after a year or two at 165.
As for potential 174, Collin Moore of Creston is a commit for next year and he is currently ranked by both D1wrestling and either InterMat or Flo.
Rodriguez should provide depth at 125 next year and might grow into a 133 for us.

Just looked in on Flo and I think Mackall just upset Yanni Demikihallis (sp) at journeyman classic. Think we better go get him. Could be a very good 133.
Looks like he's in the finals against Nick Suriano.

Think about what is going on with the Buckeyes.

Current lineup features a 3x champ, a Jr World freestyle champ who's a true frosh, a 2x AA who's a title contender, and seven other guys that all have AA potential (at the least). They have verbals for next year from two Top Five recruits and Alex Marinelli signed for the year after.

Probable redshirt for this year--Micah Jordan.

Spencer Lee and Mark Hall? Hell, yeah! Go get em Tom. Why would they want to go anywhere else?

why not Mark Hall & Spencer Lee? ohio st has had guys of that caliber in recent history: Logan Stieber, Jaggers, Tomy Rowlands--maybe yet to come Snyder, Bo Jordan, Tomasello, Micah ?

imo no one is "burning eligibility". Best guy wrestlers, if u can help the team to a title then u wrestle. Ryan wont wrestle a kid if he is not ready. RS can come any year in wrestling.

And what did all of those names have in common? Ohioans. Of course Ohio State is likely to pull in top rated Ohioans. That was all the talk about Ohio State being such a sleeping dragon when Tom Ryan took the helm, keeping more talent at tOSU, which he has done.

Spencer Lee (PA) and Mark Hall (MN) are top rated guys in their class. These guys have their top in-state universities eyeing them and unless you're sitting on a nugget of I side information about these guys really favoring Ohio State, I tend to err on the in-state schools having a good starting shot, especially when it's Minnesota and Penn State being those in-state schools. They have won national championships, they have that pedigree.

Now, Ohio state has shown it can be a contender; should the team win the title, that's Ohio State graduating to the upper echelon of wrestling. That's another accomplishment that can be used to attract even more elite talent from outside of Ohio than the team has gotten so far. More recruiting weapons is what I'm saying.

Now, should Ohio State start becoming a year-in, year-out contender team, you can go on to create the culture of being stocked with so many talented wrestlers that the backups might be sacrificing scholarship money or eligibility because they're being just a backup and they're competing for that spot. That's my point. I'm not saying that's happening now, but that's the culture you want to create to an extent.

Another angle for continued momentum with recruiting:

Obviously Logan aspires to International success, however, having him "around" in a coaching/training capacity after this year would seem to be awful attractive to the highest echelon of recruits who also aspire to take the International route.

Nicholas,
imo, this is not about who has the edge, its about geting in the game, fighting hard, being confident and occasionally winning a big battle out-of-state, which ohio st never did unil Tom Ryan. In this next years class Myles Martin & Ke-Shawn Hayes were about as big as it gets, and Penn st wanted both.

yes we realize MN and Penn st have edge with their in-state kids, however thats no reason not to go after a kid. Zeke jones just took 195 Lance Benick from MN to AZ st. Marsteller from PA went to Okla st.

Snyder was from Md, he chose ohio st over Penn st, historically Penn st always gets Md kids in football & wrestling --and no recuit is more important Kyle Snyder.

I think we are starting to see just like in college football and basketball that it doesn't necessarily matter what the home state team is. For example Ohio State gets the best linebacker in the nation last year from Georgia the heart of SEC country.

I think if kids see the success the program is having they will go there. Plus the OTC is becoming a huge selling point for the elite level recruits. Just like Zeke will see the Sunkist Club, Ohio State can sell the RTC and the talent it's produced there under Rosselli.

This makes it 2 years in a row Ohio State has gotten huge national recruits from outside of Ohio. FWIW Mark Hall is originally from Michigan and wrestled in KY for a year as well before landing in Minnesota. Spencer Lee is a young Logan Stieber and I wouldn't be shocked if he landed in Columbus.

Bob, do you know if Myles Martin & Ke-Shawn Hayes will be at Ironman this year? I'd like to see the future Buckeyes wrestle in person.
