Wow!

I wish Lang well as he continues in a life of sobriety.
Dad sounds like quite a guy...and not in a good way.

Great to know he is doing well. I wonder what had happened to him all these years later.

The Dad sounds like a real piece of work...

Had a guy come into my store today and we started talking wrestling. Turns out he knows Ryan Lang's Dad. Had to bite my tongue...

Did anyone else notice him outing Herbert?

Interesting.

Ethan: That was my reading of the article as well.

College kids do stupid stuff, all of them. And for some this behavior will spiral out of control.

I have first hand knowledge of the difficulties Ryan will be faced with for the rest of his life. I think many who have not had problems with these things underestimate what it takes to overcome them. It is never just as simple as a choice to stop. Recovery involves an entire reset of your ways of thinking and behaving. Many, in fact I would say most will fail.

I wish Ryan the best and will be rooting for him.

Kevin: Your insights are spot on.

I didn't piece it together with Herbert. I just assumed he meant a large group of Olympians, perhaps different sports even.

I join all of you in wishing this young man ongoing success in what has undoubtedly been an extremely difficult battle, to defeat or at least ward off his demons.
And I don't know his dad from Adam.
But geez, unless you all know the dad personally, don't you think we might be being a wee bit eager to throw him under the proverbial bus?
Because as this young man re-enters and adjusts to the wonderful world of the (relatively) sober, and matures a bit, I wouldn't be surprised if he comes to view his dad's past actions in a slightly different/more favorable light.
Because that is a fairly common experience.
And for whatever it's worth, I sense that some of his current comments may be, shall we say, slightly "exaggerated" - e.g., "[his] dad would make [him] bat for an hour for every strike [he] had during the games."
So if he went four for four with four homers, hitting each when he had two strikes, then he had to spend eight hours in the batting cage?
I'll call absolute horse**** on that one.
Regardless, a lot of young men had demanding parents, or worse; so I sure hope that he's not inferring that his dad's past actions, perceived or actual, provide him with some sort of excuse for the poor choices he's made over the past decade or so; because absent accepting responsibility for his own choices and behavior, I fear that this young man will be facing an increasingly uphill battle.
But I digress, and again, wish him well.

I bet it was "strike out", not strike. My guess is the reporter messed up the quote...but I'm wrong a lot.

You're probably right...but then I'm wrong a lot too!

Hank...Well played sir.

I know a lot of people are talking about him "outing" Herbert, but as long as you're not talking performance enhancers, I think you're ok.

I may have missed it, but did he allude to his drug abuse leading to his performance during his senior season? The guy was a runner-up in 2007 and an All American in 2006 but didn't come close in 2008. Granted, he did move up a weight and it was a bear of a bracket...one of the best brackets ever.
