No one can break down the tourney like Brakeman. Even his "abridged version" gives fabulous insight.

Am I misreading his division 1 synopsis?
"Only three times in the last 36 years has Lakewood St. Edward failed to win a team trophy (28 titles and 5 runner-up trophies), and the last time it happened was in 1993"
Wadsworth won it in 2010. And if it's only been 3 times, how can they have 5 runner-up trophies?
I love Brakeman's reports, so I don't want to bash him or anything, but am I missing something?

Would it be they didn't place as a team? Just guessing. It seems near impossible that would happen. Although that was when Walsh was D1 and absolutely awesome.

Per my read, he's saying that they've been shut out/not won a trophy only 3 times in 36 years, most recently in '93. Of the remaining 33 years, they've won 28 titles and finished as runner-up five times.

Casey: You laid it out right. When I read it the first time, I had to re-read it. I was like a computer glitching trying to reconcile the Wadsworth win and what he wrote.
And then I figured it out.
They have finished in the top two of the team race for 33 out of 36 years. The other three years, they finished third or worse.

I'm glad some people are still doing the hard work and writing these summaries. I hadn't been paying close attention to high school wrestling this year and was surprised to find out that Walsh Jesuit was in Division I this year. I remember my team competing against them at the Garfield Heights sectional back it the day. That was brutal!
St. Edward qualifying only six to the state tournament was also a shock. I hope they are able to get back to their old form soon. Until then, I'm rooting for Perry to finally win a state title! They've been trying for a long time.

Chris: Where did you wrestle? We (Shaker) were at the same sectional. Walsh, Solon, Maple, Ignatius, Cleve. Heights, Garfield Heights, etc....
What a brutal sectional!
Wait...were you at Shaw? That's right. We've talked about it.

This could be the firs year since 1978-1979 they could be without an individual state champion too. I don't know what they have in the junior high program but Bentley is the best shot they have this year and next at a state title and he's in a very deep 113 this year.

Not to nit pick, but I think 1990 was the last time they didn't have a champion. A junior, Rich Hepp was their best shot (although he would've had to go through Andrassy). He didn't end up even qualifying due to some sort of bizarre home accident. Gustovich took third and Herb Russell was a player, but didn't get out of Mentor.
St. Joes won that year on the strength of Mihalic, St. John, the Gron brothers, Petch and of course Mr. Splete. Walsh was runner-up and it started the run of Walsh Super Teams in the 90s.
