Heflin at 2nd seed...

That weight class has little difference between 2-7. Seeds won't hold although hopefully Heflin's will.

Glad to see Heflin get in front of Glasser and Manuel. I know in some of the rankings they had Manuel, who Heflin beat twice, ranked ahead of him. And I thought he out wrestled Glasser, but lost on a last second TD. Other than Nick and Colt, it looks pretty bad for the Bucks. Howe's return, if it happens, will be interesting. I remember when Dustin Schlatter tried to wrestle injured a few years ago, got a decent seed and didn't get past the first round.

I wonder if there's ever been a top 5 in one class in the Big Ten better than 141 this season.

I don't know about better (it's kind of hard to get much better), but there have been some comparable.

A couple years ago you had Reece Humphrey, Franklin Gomez, Jayson Ness, Dan Dennis, and Jimmy Kennedy.

In 2008 you had Brent Metcalf, Dustin Schlatter, Lance Palmer, Josh Churella, Ryan Lang, and I don't know who else, but that's a heck of a class too.

There are likely some others as those are just within the last 5 years. It seems like every year in the Big 10 there is a weight class that is freaking nuts.

Ben, can you edit your original post and in parathesis, post the number of NCAA qualifiers from the BigTen? ex: 141 (5) (or whatever the number was.

No biggie if you can't, thanks if you do.

I would be extremely happy to see Colt and Heflin wrestle to their seeds. I don't think Howe will show up in the form we are use to seeing him, it will be a matter of how much his injury compromises his wrestling. If those guys finish 2 or higher, it stands to reason that they will obtaining very good seeds at the NCAAs.

I don't like the idea of leaving things to at large bids. Too subjective.

Right now as it stands per the seeding, OSU gets 3 qualifiers.

I like Heflin's chances. If he beats Zeerip and then Glasser, he is in the finals. I think he has a slight edge on Zeerip and it is a toss up with Glasser. Hopefully, he has learned from his earlier loss.

Heflin needs to improve at wrestling a fast paced match, specifically hand fighting and downblocking. He has two guys in his path that he is basically even with that wrestle with a quick pace and he lost to both of them(Glasser and Lofthouse).

It is imperative that he understands that the fast pace is his reason for an eventual loss of position.

"Everyone is going to wrestle you tough and maintain position until they get tired" -Bobby Douglas, I was a freshman at the time and it stuck.

The conclusion that I ended up drawing was that position is largely a function of outlasting your opponent and getting him to make a mistake as the match wears on. It is the wrestler that can wrestle at a high pace and wear on his opponent until he forces his opponent into a mistake, slight to egregious, which can be exploited.

This is one of the chief premises behind Iowa wrestling. It is why so many look impressive as the match starts at sprint and there is no let up in intensity for the whole match.

Colt has the fast pace down and always has.

No question about that, but as you stated earlier, it's all about capatilizing on the opponents mistakes that allow you to win the matches. IMO, this has been a problem (along with the obvious down position) that have hurt him.

This is the message I would like shared with everyone whom is either just a spectator or whom has never wrestled in college or just doesn't understand college wrestling. If you find college wrestling boring or lacking in action...it's because you don't grab this concept.

I would also like to see this drilled into the head of any wreslter that thinks they may want to wrestle in college. This is what it is about. I'm not slighting how important this should be at the HS level, but it really applies the upper 10% of HS wrestlers...when they wrestle each other.

This one hurts to think about, i was there in front row-- Keaton Anderson had been ranked #1 the entire second half of the season, but at Big Tens he tore his ACL and badly.

with his leg useless still in the Semis, Keaton caught eventual champion Bertin with his patented cradle but only for 2-- that was Keatons chance but on one leg he needed to get 3 or a pin out of it.

He didnt and Bertin beat him by a point. Keaton wouldnt default out and he wrestled the N Illinois kid right in front of me for 5th --and TWICE during the match the referee asked Keaton if he wanted to continue so painful was Keatons leg obviously.

but Keaton fought on and after his loss, MironK put his arm around Keaton and consoled him as they walked slowly away. Brave effort-- Keaton Anderson was a great wrestler who deserved a better fate his senior year. s/BobP

Molinaro v Zilverberg in quarters looks interesting. The match went 3-2 in the dual and Molinaro took a questionable injury time.

It was neat to see Zilverberg interviewed and talk about being a Gopher since he was a little kid. It is that kind of mentality that makes coaching and recruiting easy.

Magrum and Capone have to win one "upset" apiece to automatically qualify. Very doable. It has been pretty much spelled out for them and they see the proverbial writing on the wall.
