Discussion Topic: Who beat Tim Dernlan?
Doug Brandt added to this discussion on February 23, 2011

Not knowing the answer, I was trying to fish out Fried's losses from the 1st interview. Mike, I bet you're right about Elsass and Shjamil Pattie.

Ohio Wrestling Site: You were defeated by just two Ohio opponents in high school. Whether it was in folkstyle or freestyle, was there ever any Ohio wrestler that you had trouble getting past growing up?

Fried: Well, you know was always tough for me was Audie Atienza. We wrestled in 8th grade and had a 8-6 match. I think he started in 7th grade. He gave me fits in that match. He was very slick and I respected his technique. I was not surprised when he dominated at State. Also, I remember Steve Dernlan and I traded matches my Sophomore or Junior year. He pinned me (while he was up by about eight points) at I think Freestyle States, and then I beat him to make the Junior World team later that year. Scott Pergram (State champ in 89) and I traded matches Freshman and Sophomore year I think. I wasn’t surprised when he put it together his senior year and dominated at State either. Besides that, I know I would have had my hands full if Mike Gilmore from Nordonia would have made the finals my senior year. He was my first drill partner at Longwood as a matter of fact. I beat him by 6 or 7 in the regular season, but he lost in the semis, due to being disqualified for an illegal spladle-type move (he was dominating the match). He was on a roll, had nothing to lose and I know I would have been challenged had he made the finals.

Quote from Mark Palumbo's post:

""John McGhee I think had three losses. I forget agaisnt who. Chad Owens maybe one or two?"

I think and old teammate of mine from Kent, Keith Shamblin from South East beat him at least one time."

I remember a finals match at North Canton Hoover,McGhee vs a kid from St Josephs I think.

They were on their feet, the kid steps in, bear hug inside trip, plant McGhee right on his back. The ref was let's say deliberate at getting there, no back points. McGhee wins by a point or 2, the kid gets a standing O.

Ott lost to Shawn Protz from Aurora at the Top Gun when he came back from whatever number knee surgery.

Lester lost to Nate Gulosh from Walsh when coming back from a broken leg.

I believe Forward's loss to Creech his freshman year was in OT and Clark was called for scissoring the head when Creech split the middle on a shot. One of the worst calls ever in the state finals.

I remember he and Steve trading those matches. That had to be our sophomore year.

I was in that group at Frestyle States, Alan and I were actually in (or just finished) 8th grade (can't remember the month of Freestyle States back then) and Scott was a year or 2 ahead of us. I wrestled Pergram in the semis and I think Alan wrestled Shawn Faulkner from Cylde (but it may have been Mark Tinney, because he was there too). What a group. 4 state champs, a bunch of other great guys, and goofy me. Pergram was like wrestling a brick wall. I got nowhere with that guy. Couldn't turn him to save my life. Anyway Shawn & I wrestled for 3rd & 4th. Best part of that day was having Dave Dernlan, Jeff Dernlan, and Adam DiSabito in my corner for the 3rd/4th finals. That was the summer Jeff went on to win the national tournament. A great summer indeed!

Again...thanks for the memories.

"I'm just going from memory here, but I thought Fried's three losses were to Mike Elsass (Hoover) in the State semi-finals as a freshman. Then to Shjamil Pattie (Elyria) in the Regional finals his sophomore year, and then to a PA (North Allegeny, maybe) wrestler up a weight or two his senior season in a dual."

MikeR,
good memory by u-- yes the 3 losses u named were in fact Alan Frieds only 3 hs in-season losses during his career at st Eds: Elsass, Pattie and the N. Allegheny kid when Fried was up 2 wts from 140 to 152.

btw, the N. Allegheny kid was Rich Catalano, PA AAA state champ that year. s/BobP

Brinzer was a "Fried-like" legend in PA. I remember when I heard that Fried had lost (and it wasn't close), I just assumed he had bumped all the way up to 160 and wrestled Brinzer. In the days before the Internet (thanks Al Gore), it was just word-of-mouth. It took a week or so to confirm the loss even happened, let alone that the loss was to Catalano.

So the losses to Pergram and Dernlan were in the summer then...that makes a lot more sense. Although, I always assumed, with his four Junior National titiles, that Fried was dominant on the summer circut. Think about who tough Ohio summer freestyle was back then if Alan Fried is dropping bouts?

BTW, I think it's great that Fried gives Audie Atienza some love in that article. People forget how good that guy was.

yes Brinzer was 160 on that great 1989 N Allegheny PA team. The 4X AAA state champ Ty Moore was 112.

coach Howard Ferguson's final act before his untimely death in Oct 1989, going to N Allegheny and beating that legendary PA team. s/BobP

Here's an old article on Brinzer: http://www.wrestlingpod.com/wrestling-news/w1026/

I remember seeing him at Nationals (1993), when he was wrestling for Iowa, after transferring from Oklahoma State. If memory serves me correctly, he was getting ready to wrestle Kevin Randleman in the 177 semi-finals.

As he was getting ready to wrestle, and with a big smile on his face, he took off his shirt, which had the Oklahoma State colors on the inside. I'm sure no other Iowa wrestler, before or since, would be caught dead wearing those colors.

After matches, people would line up to get his autograph. He was the rock star of wrestling, and one of a select group of college wrestlers that the general public would pay to watch.

Scott Pergram was a freestyle and greco beast early in his hs career.

Joe, I suspect you're thinking of Greg Zoloty from Independence who won Ironman that year at 125. 125 DIII was very tough that year as Zoloty ended up third. Wroble from Chanel won the weight and Wentz from Streetsboro was runner-up.

What became of Scott at the collegiate level?

Did the Fried vs Pattie match really go to overtime because of a clothing grab? If you were there, what did you see?

Quote from Mark Niemann's post:

"I was revisiting this video... just because, I guess, and I noticed his record and the early commentary. Just wondering who beat him.

Along those lines, since Ohio never had an undefeated high school wrestler, with those having less than 3 or 5 losses, can we name the losses?

One more time: Of those Ohio High School Wrestlers that have less than 3 (or maybe 5) losses on their record, who were the losses?

Example:
Jim Jordan (Graham) 180-1 (maybe)
Rob Johnson (Watkins Memorial) dec. Jim Jordan (Graham) 2-1"

Maybe I am not understanding this, and have not read the entire thread, but Tom Milkovich was 100-0.

Either I am old (probably) or you guys are young (perhaps).

If you're talking about their State finals match, I believe it was a stalling call that put the bout into OT. The match is on one of the Ohio Wrestling Greats videos from the Channel 9 website. It also may be in The Vault on GOhio.
