Hold on a second. That is their recruiting class? Their incoming class? The new guys coming in, to be combined with the returnees? What are many/most of these guys thinking?
I admire guys in any sport who look to take on a challenge, but this might be just a weeeeeeee bit extreme. Reminds me of when one of my older boys was looking at schools for baseball. One had SIX catchers and TWENTY-THREE pitchers. Just not enough available playing time for everyone. And at least in baseball you can substitute during the game.

Gary: As long as NDC is NAIA, the amount of money they choose to spend on scholarships is unlimited. I have no idea how many of these kids are getting some form of ride but money for college can be the ultimate enticement.
Also, NDC is the reigning National Champ in NAIA. That's a strong incentive as well. Some very good programs are sending kids to NDC. Obviously, the coaches of these schools feel it's a good choice.

I would imagine they have a high turnover rate, too. I can't imagine they have 80+ guys in their wrestling room.

I saw a video last year during their practice, and it looked plenty crowded then. I don't know how they'll manage so many guys???

Hank, you know better than to believe that all coaches have the best interests of their athletes in mind. After all, you coached at a school with Bud Longo. :(
Now I understand the allure of a scholarship, but how long will these guys be on scholarship when they aren't wrestling for any number of reasons?

In which case I repeat, what are a lot of these guys thinking? And how is the program selling itself to these kids?

Let's not let this devolve into a Notre Dame bashing party. I don't know what the coaching staff's model is there, and ultimately it doesn't matter much to me. Sure, it leaves me scratching my head to see so many commits each year, but I really don't know what's going on behind the scenes. I'm sure everyone that goes there realizes they will have some competition for a starting spot.
Ultimately, all I can say for sure is that I'm glad they started a wrestling program and it's awesome to have the best NAIA team in the country here in Ohio.

I am not bashing the school as much as questioning what these kids are thinking when they decide to go there.

They're in the transition process to Divison II, so at some point there are going to be tighter controls in terms of roster and scholarships. I don't know the exact years on the transition process.

Gary,
I understand your point. It comes down to this: If you are a 145 pound freshman-to-be, would you rather come to NDC and train with national champions Adam Koballa, Jeff Pelton and Thomas Straughn, not to mention Ashtin Primus, and be part of an incoming class that includes Jerrel Valliant, Louden Gordon and Mike Kovach around your weight class... or would you rather go to a place where the competition isn't as elite and possibly be assured of a varsity spot? These incoming freshman obviously chose the first option.

Josh,
Part of the process of gaining eligibility in NCAA Division 2 is adhering to their scholarship guidelines, etc., thus I'm sure that NDC is already 100% compliant... and still getting an absolute gold mine of talent.
