It was nice to see Ohio put together another pretty good junior dual team.
On the way to winning their opening pool yesterday they beat Iowa 37-20. No surprises. The wrestlers you would expect to go undefeated on the day did. Others, who took a loss, also showed they were capable of pullling off an upset or two.
Unlike last year (and unfortunately) I think were are in the tougher pool today (with a monster Illinois team) and may be wrestling a defacto championship against Illinois prior to the finals. That's assuming Team Ohio can beat Wisconsin or the MIch/Minn winner.

steve: Glad you brought this up. I looked up results late yesterday and spent a little time this morning (my day off) perusing Disney results. The number of Ohio teams at Disney is staggering although there is not one "super team"--just a few tough ones.
Ohio beat a solid Iowa squad to win their pool. This team is not quite as strong as some others weve sent but other states could make the same claim. Ohio will always wrestle hard at this event. If we're underdogs against Illinois--so be it. Pressures on them. Go Ohio.
It's a bit embarrassing that Ohio has basically given up on participating in Cadets and Jr duals in all but Jr freestyle. Still, as mentioned above, Ohio coaches are sending more kids to Disney than any other state. And PA seems to like the event a lot as well. When you look at the current state of international wrestling--with the ball grab and inane tiebreakers--it's not hard to see that a lot of high school coaches in the country's two most prominent states are opting instead for a summer folkstyle event.

Thanks, Hank.
Ohio beats New Jersey 41-21 and Michigan 34-28.
They will face Illinois next to see who goes to the championship dual. Interestingly, Illinois beat NJ and MI with almost exactly the same scores (41-18 over NJ and 34-27 over Michigan).

Ohio vs. Illinois:
98: Jude Michel comes up huge with a pin over Nikosi Moody after he got teched in the first period. Ohio up 5-0.
105: Tomasello beats Kevon Powell in 3 periods. Ohio up 8-1.
Now things take an unfortunate turn for Ohio...
112: Edgar Bright gets pinned. Ohio up 8-6.
119: Jerome Robinson injury defaults. Illinois up 11-8.
125: Kagen Squire with a nice win over stellar freshman Ben Whitford in 3 periods. Illinois up 12-11.
130: Johnni Dijulius blanks his opponent in straight sets. Ohio up 14-12.
135: Hunter Stieber beats Nick Dardanes, who I believe had an excellent tournament to win FILA Jrs in Cleveland. Ohio up 17-13.
140: Edwin Cooper pins Clay Wenger. This is where it would have been nice to have Tessari (though it was in a close loss to Cooper that Tessari sustained his injury). Illinois up 18-17.
145: Brad Squire slays Spartacus. Ohio up 20-18.
152: Ian Miller downs Joey "The Sausage" Kielbasa 1-0, 2-0. Ohio up 23-18.
160: Pierce Harger loses in 3 periods. Ohio up 24-21.
171: Jahwon Akui pins Nick Sulzer in 1:11. OUCH! Illinois up 26-24.
189: Austin Marsden beats Sam Wheeler in 3 periods. Illinois up 29-25.
215: Lee Munster bumps up to beat Tavanello and ice the dual. Illinois leads 32-26.
285: Billy Vaughan accepts a forfeit, but it's not enough. Illinois beats Ohio 32-31 in what was probably an awesome dual to watch.

Edgar Bright gets pinned and robinson injury defaults but Ohio gets big wins from Kagan Squire, John DiJulius and Hunter Stieber. Stieber's win is over highly regarded Nick Dardanes. John DiJulius seems to be having a "coming out" party at this event for national wrestling fans who might not have known him. Illinois lineup is relentlessly tough. Ohio has 17-13 lead.

Wenger qualified for state for Wadsworth at 152. He's 140 for this event. Interesting. Wonder if he wrestled up this year because he couldn't beat out the two guys below him?
When did Cooper and Tessari wrestle?
Ohio up 18-13 but the pins/inj default have hurt. Lead would be more comfortable if not for the bonus points.

Incidentally, Ian Miller won a decision over Joey Kielbasa at 152. Kielbasa, as you can imagine, is originally from Parma. Lakewood Steve will get the joke...

Tessari and Cooper wrestled at FILA Jrs. in Cleveland. I think Tessari took the first period comfortably and then Cooper won the next two.

Nick Sulzer gets pinned at 171. With Illinois up by 2 and Lee Munster on deck, it's not looking good. One big upset is usually the difference in this type of dual. Proctor by close dec over Pierce Harger at 160.

Tough break for the Ohio team, a 1-point loss to eventual winner Illinois. Who would figure Sulzer would lose, let alone get pinned? Still managed to get a solid 3rd place finish. I think the 2 future Buckeyes (DiJulius & Stieber) went undefeated, I like that.
