WOOOHOOO!

Lance worked his butt off for 7 minutes and won. What a great effort.

Things that were very impressive:
-How long he fought off that single leg in the first period.
-How long and hard he rode in the second period.
-His near reversal from the bottom (I don't know about that locked hands call, and it certainly looked like an escape to me).
-Obviously the scramble for the winning TD.

Over the past few years, we have seen Metcalf always win the scrambles against Lance (e.g. the Nationals semi-final match). It was great to see Lance give such a great effort and come up with the win.

Was it just me or did it seem like Lance had a different look about him in this match? After that first period, he really seemed to have an aura of confidence about him that I don't recall in previous meetings with Metcalf. I may be reading more into the match than there really is.

Now the big task is being able to repeat that performance. The NCAA title at 149 pounds still goes through Metcalf. Lance will have to beat him one more time to come away with a National Championship.

Ahhhh Colt lost his focus off the whistle after escaping and it cost him the match.

Good eye Ben, caught him flat footed

Brad-
Lance has never earned riding time on Metcalf until this meeting. It materially changes everything. Being on top in the 2nd is different than the 3rd. Less sweat, comparatively fresher/stronger. I thought Lance hurried getting his legs in the past and was a little sloppy in doing so which created an advantage to Metcalf. He did a very good job today at getting his legs in. Once his legs are in you can count :30 seconds of expired time. He gets the legs in twice with some jockeying time and he has aquired enough riding time. I think Lance can work on tying Metcalf's wrist even more and get the legs in with lesser risk. Metcalf's scrambling is his weakest position. The position that was created was in Lance's favor and with the time left on the clock, I was only worried about a stalemate.

Reminds me of when Keddy beat Pucillo in the semis last year in the tiebreakers...

I can't say for sure (because I haven't gone back to watch a replay) but with the "escape" that wasn't (I have no problem with the call), if Metcalf was still in control, was there a locking of his hands underneath Palmer? If there was, and they were on the mat, it should have been a penalty point since Metcalf hadn't given up control. You don't often see it from this position but it should still be a point. Be interesting to watch the replay.
End result, it didn't matter. Good match.

There was a locking hands call, and they did give Lance the point.

Loved the Palmer match. Key to beating Metcalf is not being intimidated. Lance wasn't.

Rex: I'd be very interested in your thoughts on Humphrey's effort before I say a word.

125: Triggas 5th--Kicked quiroga's butt for 5th. That's a quality win.
133: Paddock 5th (nice tourney)
141: Humphrey 2nd
149: Palmer 1st--very nice win--he should be #1 seed at nationals and draw away from Metcalf.
157: Nemec--DNP--in fairness, he had a terrible draw because Kinser got upset first round. If Kinser does what he's supposed to, Nemec has a solid shot to finish 5th. Seems as if he's had hard luck all season.
165: Spons--2nd--nice win over Morningstar--Howe is a monster talent but Colt is close. Think Palmer v Metcalf.
174: Rella--7th. I think he has a good shot to get an at large bid.
184: Pucillo--3rd. Had what appears to have been a controlling win over Erwin. Dergo has emerged this season as a real star. He handled Keddy in the finals.
197: Magrum--8th.
285: Morrison 7th.

I'm not sure how it shakes out but I think Ohio State will send 7 to nationals as I believe Rella will get an at large bid although I'm not positive as to how that process plays out. Morrison, Magrum and Nemec appear unlikely to qualify. Hope I'm wrong.

Reese in one word, freestyle.

I saw 3x where he was in a position that he no longer wanted to wrestle from and waited for a stalemate without attempting to improve position. His key to winning the title is to create more opportunities. I do realize that he is ultra explosive and has an advantage from a restart, but it went against him today and ultimately he did not have enough attempts.

Anyone notice Palmer releasing his hold on Metcalf's right arm with about 12 seconds left to flex his left arm for I think it was the coaches? Fortunately it only allowed Metcalf off his back and nothing more but I found it kind of funny.

I think the riding in the second period was key. Metcalf looked tired and beat up a bit at the end of that period.

I didn't notice it the first time but I did when I rewatched. Funny stuff. It would have been cool if he would have gotten the pin, though, so he could say he pinned Schlatter and Metcalf.

Rella pretty much is going to get a wild card.

Going to be hard for Nemec to justify a wild card, given the fact he didn't place in his conference - and that BOTH Schlatter and Kinser need wild cards in the Big Ten as well.

I don't know if Magrum has had strong enough season to get one. Then again, losing to Powless 7-0 to get the AQ puts you in that bind.

Morrison is probably not looking at a wild card because of there only being three total to be doled out - and Trice basically has one of them.
