Defense is asserted through head/hand position and reaction. This may be assessed in degrees and a certain threshold must be met in order to successfully counter. When the athlete has demonstrated an amazingly high degree of counter effectiveness and is suddenly lacking, it seems odd and out of character. Obviously, Mike is impaired to a degree. I don't know why, but I am sure it has been tough on him with the degree of excellence that he has previously shown. I am a Pucillo fan and hope that whatever physical ailment alleviates between now and the NCAAs, but if not, so be it. The situation is what it is. The only thing I know is that he is competing with all he has at the moment.
