Discussion Topic: OHSAA Divison I State Storylines

With the state tournament fast approaching this week there are some very interesting storylines that will unfold at the Schott.
1. The team race between Wadsworth and St. Eds. Can Eds win their 14th straight team title or will Wadsworth grab the throne? Right now on paper it appears that Wadsworth will have 6 finalists and Eds 5 finalists with it probably coming down to the heavyweight match.
2. The landmine of a field at 125 and 135 both with state champions in the weight class. It will be a battle for both of those titles.
3. There are 7 returning champions in the field and 2 former state champions. How many will repeat again?
These are just some of the storylines without going into great detail. We'll be there this weekend with coverage for the state tournament.

Without doing any research I can only name 4 returning champs and 2 lost at districts.
Kory Mines - 112 who i believe lost in the semis to a freshman who placed 4th at sectionals.
Jamie Clark - 130
Shawn Fayette -135(i think) lost in the finals to Reigle at districts
Josh Demas -171 won 152 last year.
The D1 team title is definitely going to be interesting this year.

True, the board seems to be more based around Ohio State and the college scene.

That is one thing that I would love to bring back is the high school talk. I think high school talk is the bread and butter of wrestling. You can only talk about 4 D1 programs so much.
I am super excited as always about the upcoming state tournament and will be there as always.
Seems like the race for Wadsworth and Eds will be very hotly contested as I mentioned. I think that bonus points will have a factor plus how the big boys for Wadsworth do as well. They potentially could have a clean sweep of them this year with Busson, Tavanello and Buzzelli.

I think one of the reasons so few people talk about high school wrestling especially around the State Tournament time is because there is so little drama. St. Eds vs. Wadsworth is pretty cool, but just about every weight class has an overwhelming favorite. The same goes for D2 and D3. If you want people to really get excited about high school wrestling again, there has to be a single division state tournament. The finals would sell out of tickets in about ten minutes!

Thanks, Bob. I guess I'm just frustrated that Ohio has some of the best wrestlers in the nation and very lame, watered down, unexciting state tournament where the best don't get to wrestle each other.
Even though Division I college wrestling is shrinking and having troubles, it still has the best competition with the best wrestlers taking the mat at the end of the season. That's what people like to see, and I can't wait until the national tournament. I hope ESPN360 will be providing live coverage again this year.

My comment is more an observation. It seems, which I like alot about this site, is that we are really carefull about commenting on any high school kid, unless very positive. We sort of leave them alone, mainly I think because we have all been there and know how these kids can take things. I remeber Brian Brakeman calling me, and I quote slow and lethargic. it hurt and made me mad as hell especially because at the time he wrote it, he was right. We are even carefull about commenting on college kids. The drama comes from being at the tournament, if you have wrestled in it or coached it can inspire kids to go beyond the norm. We will watch great kids this weekend, and sit in aware and what they have become. These are the next national champs and all americans. What we learn in ohio is that we are only limited by how hard we are willing to work. This is an adult sight and most if not all respect opinions even if they are not our own. Let's keep our divisions, argue who is the greatest and relish it what we have built, we are ohio and we are great.

I agree but, at the same token, there are many kids that are getting to the state tournament who would not make it in another division. This is why I feel we should be modeling our tourney after NJ's,
a team tournament plus an individual tourney with no team score kept.
