Discussion Topic: Dear Lee Kemp

After watching the tape delayed telecast on BTN, I have a question for you.

Do you think Michigan was trying hard?

I ask because you only mentioned it about 5000 times.

Did you expect them to lay on their backs and yell "I give"?

Sincerely,
Some Schmuck on a wrestling forum.

Ha!!! That's a funny post.

Honestly, I didn't mind him. Sure he mentioned that a few times... a few more times...and again a few more times (sometimes in the same match), but he does have extensive knowledge of the sport.

Plus, I think he grew up in Cleveland. Just down from Columbia Station High School if I'm not mistaking!!! :-)

"but he does have extensive knowledge of the sport."
--------------------------

yeh, but i wish Kemp would have shared it with us, instead of being a "straight man" (Kemp from Chardon btw) ---- the other guy was a complete joke, just talking alot of "filler talk", laughing, backslapping BS.

its amazing how hard TV makes it seem to get a good color man and announcer. Even NCAAs, i recall one year ESPN had this Adrian Karsten doing the NCAA announcing, he referred to the mat as "the ring".

It's true. They could find people that would do 10x as good of a job if they would just trust that people know how to talk. Maybe they would struggle filling time from lack of experience, but the quality of what they did say would be high quality.

With that said, I'm glad Kemp was on there. The other guy, not so much.

I noticed the "regular" announcers ( Johnson & Gibbons) were doing the Minn. /Ilinois match prior to the Bucs broadcast, so I guess we got the "second string" team. I was hoping Kemp would elaborate on why he went to Wisc. instead of OSU.

"delivering an exciting broadcast is not always easy"
--------------------

well, easy is not the issue--- if cant be exciting, then be informative-- if a announcer cant deliver it, then step aside or be removed for someone who can.

I was at the match so I can't comment on how Mr. Kemp did, however a friend of mine said he spoke with him after the match and was surprised by not only how approachable he was but also by easily he talked it up with him, almost as if he had known him before. I would say that is a class act!!!

not doubting Lee Kemp "a class act", also probably the greatest wrestler ever from Ohio.

The Issue is the caliber of TV announcing, Kemp was good except for his frequent "Michigan is really wrestling hard" filler-talk.

the other guy was awful. BTN and its fans deserve better.

It was dry, but the matches were very good. Granted it is not an easy job, as it requires quite a bit of prep work and being dialed into the wrestlers and their abilities.

BTW, Hank

LMFAO

With the right announcing, wrestling will get more fans.

Thankfully, at leat they are showing wrestling.

I thought Kemp did fine. I doubt its his primary job. Jim Nantz isn't coming anytime soon.

I went to a clinic he put on sometime around 1981 with Blubagh. He was as accomodating and gracious then as Lou says he is now.

Kemp's cousin is a frequent customer to my store. By all accounts, he is a great guy. But he forced me to use the mute button last night.

What I noticed last night that went unmentioned during the broadcast:

1) Joe McFarland made a HUGE mistake by putting Sean Boyle down to start the third. No reason to do it. Boyle looked good on his feet and Triggas greatest strength is top. Even though Boyle had gotten out once, there was no reason to assume he'd do it again. Bad, bad decision.

2) Zac Stevens has really good hip action and it gave Paddock trouble esp. on the mat. Paddock wrestled hard but Stevens was better than expected.

3) Mark Weber did not wrestle hard against Reece Humphrey in spite of Kemp's comments. He looked intimidated and Reece took advantage. Reece was very sharp.

4) Lance Palmer is solid badess. He looks highly motivated. Can't wait to see him take on Metcalf in Iowa City.

5) Jameson gets headlocked and ends up with a reversal. The kid is a rubber band. Not a pretty effort but a W is a W.

6) Colt Sponseller tore apart a solid opponent. I'm not sure Colt has ever looked better. He hit varied shots with different setups. Pure clinic.

7) Dave Rella has picked up his top game alot and he's doing a much better job of getting to a shot. It was a pleasure to watch him manage the match. He's clearly wrestling the best he has in his career.

Dinner guests have arrived. More thoughts to come...
