Discussion Topic: The Ohio State University v. Iowa State University - Semifinals at the National Duals
Hank Kornblut added to this discussion on January 9, 2010

Bucks are coming off a big win. The quarters are where the Bucks tripped the last two seasons so it's a huge step for them to get past Cornell. Catalysts for this victory were Jameson and Triggas. Certainly neither were favorites let alone expected to win by fall. It would have been grand to have been in attendance for this dual.

So, how does Ohio State stack up against ISU? It's really too close to call.

125: Long v Triggas--Long is the favorite unless Triggas works more magic from top. 3-0 ISU

133: Fanthorpe v Paddock--Solid vet against the true frosh. Hopefully it stays at a decision. 6-0 ISU

141: Jensen v Hump--No Gallick gives Ohio State a big advantage but Jensen just pinned Krom. Was it a fluke. Hump does enough to get a decision as he works toward recovering from a bad day. 6-3

149: Mueller v Palmer--Lance will have to work hard to get the decision 6-6

157: Sorenson v Jameson--I don't know much about Sorenson but Jameson is coming off a big day. I like him to win another although that's hardly etched in stone. 9-6 OSU

165: Reader v Sponseller--These two have not met over the last few seasons so it's about time for this match. I like Sponseller because Reader is more offensive than a defensive specialist. In matches against more open opponents, Sponseller has better odds. Still, this is a pickem bout. Let's revisit it later.

174: Duke Burk v Dave Rella--another close matchup. A motivated Dave Rella should eke it out but it's by no means a certainty. Another to come back to.

184: Ward v Pucillo--Is Pucillo back? If he is, he wins although Ward is a tough hombre. I like Iron Mike to reassert himself as a dominant competitor and get the 3 pts for OSU. 9-6 tOSU

197: Varner v Magrum--Ouch. Magrum has been a big improvement for the Bucks at this wt from the last few years but he's outmatched. Let's hope he keeps off his back. 10-9 ISU

285: Simonson v Morrison--Corey has two wins so far and that bodes well. He should get the decision. 12-10 tOSU

Now...Bucks need to split 165 and 174 to win the dual. If they do, in theory they win the match and get a chance to face the Hawkeyes. I think that's exactly how it goes and the Bucks prevail 15-13.

Is Zabriskie out for ISU?

Also, I didn't wrestle in college. My brother did, perhaps I should ask him, but I'm curious about one thing: how much do college coaches scout/strategize about their opponents?

Curious what others say to this.

The reason I ask if that I am dombfounded, although pleased, that people would take down against Triggas. Did Cornell take down today? I thought Cornell was winning, I turned away for a moment, then the match was over.

Just curious from those in the know. I would think scouting and game planning would have to take place, but suspect decisions are often made when I watch duals.

Ethan: Plenty of scouting takes place but I think people underestimate Triggas on top. Zabriskie graduated.

Thanks Hank.

Zabriskie is still there and currently ranked 5th. Perhaps he's out for this weekend.

Tough one to call. I think Bucks pull through and wrestle better than yesterday. I think the Bucks need to win 6 matches to win.

Kiss this one goodbye with Jameson losing and now Sponseller down 4-0 in the first to Reader. It's not going to be pretty right now in this match.

They wrestled pretty uninspired. Overall I thought ISU outhustled them--particularly at the lower weights.

Jameson & Pucillo were winnable matches, but I don't know if we could have overcome the bonus points ISU got anyway. Hope they can salvage something against Minn. The Bucs looked like they could use a 2 week break.

Didn't they judt have a 2 week break?
I wonder if the level of competition they've faced has hurt them,,,,maybe not tough enough ?
And Morrison should have won .

We were onty a few points from away being shutout. The wins by Reese, Palmer and Rella pretty close matches,
