Discussion Topic: Dustin Porter versus Corey Morrison: College Edition

In the NCAA Division 1 preseason individual rankings by Amateur Wrestling News, two former northeastern Ohio high school wrestlers from the class of 2005 are in the nation's top twenty.

Dustin Porter, an alumnus of Berkshire High School in Burton, is now a senior at Gardner-Webb University where he is a three-time national qualifier and currently ranked sixteenth in the nation by AWN. He earned All-Ohio status by placing seventh in the Division 3 state tournament as a senior. He was a state alternate as a junior.

Corey Morrison, an alumnus of Shaker Heights High School, is now a senior at The Ohio State University where he qualified for the national tournament last season and is currently ranked eighteenth in the nation. He earned All-Ohio status by placing fourth in the Division 1 state tournament as a senior. He was 2-2 at the state tournament as a junior.

They met as high school seniors in the 189-pound final at the Kenston Invitational Tournament. Morrison was the defending champion and defeated then-sophomore Chris Iammarino (who would become a two-time All-Ohioan). Porter won a 5-1 decision.

They could match-up against each other again this season, five years later and hundreds of miles away from home, at the Southern Scuffle or the National Tournament.

I was at the match at the KIT Finals. The entire gym thought Corey would prevail easily. But Porter confounded him. Porter was a very smart wrestler and had a natural feel for how to move and anticipate his opponents actions. Corey was probably the only person after the match that didn't feel he had wrestled badly. Instead, he talked about what he could have done better but said that Porter was much better than anyone thought.

Porter finished 7th in D3 that year while Corey took defending state champ Mike Ward into OT in the quarterfinals and before ending up 4th. Porter was much better than 7th place and I believe he was sick/hurt.

Both Corey and Dustin Porter have had much better college careers than anyone could have anticipated. When you think about how few state champs and placers end up doing anything noteworthy in college, both these young men have far exceeded expectations.

I think Corey is now the better wrestler but we'll see what happens if they meet.
