Stieber goes down in the finals of the challenge tourney to Danny Felix. Looks like he will have a rematch with Obe Blanc for true 3rd place. Blanc beat him in 3 periods at US Nationals.

Is the home page wrong on the 211, J.D. Bergman post???

It has J.D. winning his true third match but placing third??????????? Help!

There are two events: the challenge tournament and then a championship round-robin.

By beating Bergman to win the challenge tournament, Hrovat moved on to the championship round-robin against Varner. (Varner had a bye to the championship round-robin because he won the U.S. Senior National title this spring.) By making it to that point, those two clinched first or second place.

Bergman, the runner-up in the challenge tournament, and Tamillow, the third place finisher in the challenge tournament had not yet faced each other, so they wrestled a true third place match. Bergman won that and got third place overall.

Why do they have a true third place match? Because there are three spots per weight class on the U.S. World Team (the qualifier, first alternate and second alternate) so it is a way to make sure they get the actual top three wrestlers at the trials.
