Taylor named to ASICS All-America First Team for third time; Stieber also repeats
Rob Sherrill - Center Mat Press
May 26, 2009

Four-time state champion David Taylor (135) of St. Paris (Ohio) Graham High School was named to the First Team for the third consecutive year and junior Logan Stieber (125) of Monroeville (Ohio) High also earned a repeat selection to the 14-member First Team as the 24th annual ASICS All-America Wrestling Team was announced today.

The ASICS All-America Team, selected by a nationwide panel of wrestling experts, is the only national all-star team for which wrestlers enrolled in all four high-school grades are eligible. ASICS is a title sponsor of the ASICS Vaughan USA Wrestling Fargo Junior National Championships and is a major benefactor of the sport at all levels.

“This team represents the best of the best in our schools today,” said Neil Duncan and Nick Gallo of ASICS and TW Promotions, Inc. “We are proud to have these young men, with their talent and work ethic, representing us. They are clearly the World and Olympic champions of the future.”

Members of the First Team, as well as the ASICS Wrestler of the Year, will be honored prior to the finals of the ASICS Vaughan USA Wrestling Junior National Freestyle Championships in July at Fargo, N.D.

The ASICS All-America Team includes eight wrestlers at each of the 14 high school weight classes – the First, Second, and Third Teams and five Honorable Mention selections. Wrestlers are considered at the weight class at which they competed in their state tournament or the National Prep Championships this year.

This year’s First Team includes a record eight underclassmen – seven juniors and one sophomore. Stieber, a three-time Ohio Division 3 state champion, could join Taylor as a three-time First Team member next member.

Also named were two-time National Prep champion Chris Villalonga (130) of Blairstown (New Jersey) Blair Academy, whose senior teammate, National Prep champion Edward Ruth, also was named to the team at 171; two-time state champions Devin Carter (112) of Christiansburg (Virginia) High, Jamie Clark (119) of Lakewood (Ohio) St. Edward High, Dylan Alton (145) of Mill Hall (Pennsylvania) Central Mountain High and Marshall Peppelman (152) of Harrisburg (Pennsylvania) Central Dauphin High; Andrew Alton (140), twin brother of Dylan, who won his first state title this year; and sophomore state champion Nick Brascetta (103) of Graham.

Chris Perry (189) of Stillwater (Oklahoma) High joined Taylor as four-time state champions on the First Team. Seniors Jake Kemerer (160) of Greensburg (Pennsylvania) Hempfield High and Eloheim Palma (285) of Cary (North Carolina) High were two-time state champions and Tony Nelson (215) of Cambridge (Minnesota) Cambridge-Isanti High won his first state title this year.

Blair Academy led all schools with seven overall selections, including two First Team and two Third Team selections. Graham and Central Mountain had two First Team members each, and Graham was second to Blair Academy with four overall selections. Monroeville had three selections. Seven other schools had two: Central Dauphin, St. Edward, Eureka (Missouri) High School, Perry (Oklahoma) High School, Rio Rancho (New Mexico) and Troy (New York) LaSalle Institute each had two wrestlers selected. The team also includes three brother combinations. In addition to the Altons, Logan Stieber was joined by sophomore brother Hunter (119), along with senior twins Nick (152) and Matt Lester (160) of Eureka.

The 14 First Team members combined to post 29 state high school or National Prep championships, along with six Junior National and six Cadet National titles. The Second and Third Teams rival the First Team. The Second Team combined for 36 state or National Prep titles, including a five-time champion, two four-time champions and three three-time champions, to go with three Junior National and seven Cadet National titles. The Third Team boasts 24 combined state titles, two Junior National and three Cadet National crowns.

Pennsylvania and Ohio each had four First Team selections. Pennsylvania placed 19 wrestlers on the squad, including eight on the top three teams. Ohio’s 10 top-three selections topped all states, and Ohio and New Jersey each had 14 overall selections. New York was next with eight selections, followed by California (seven), Missouri (six), Oklahoma (five) and Illinois (four). The 112 wrestlers selected come from 29 states.

A very nice showing by Ohio this year especially with Ohio leading the way with 10 wrestlers selected in the top 3.

Interesting note on this. The 3rd team member Tony Ramos just defeated Logan Stieber in straight matches at the JR World Team Trials last weekend. He pinned him in the first match. I believe this is the first loss for Stieber anywhere since Ironman his freshman year.

Heaviest freshman...

145
Taylor Massa - 9 - St. John High School [St. Johns, Michigan]

I'm an idiot. I knew (see the post below) that! Twice I read the list and both times I made this mistake. Then, I posted it! Goon.

Notice how many of the top three teamers we got to see in the Ironman last December. We are blessed to get to see outstanding wrestling in NE Ohio. If we could only get seniors back...and if it wasn't such a money grab. Two big ifs.

Kyle Lang had to have had strong consideration for HM at 160.
Very deserving for Jerome Robinson.
How is that senior 103 from Michigan?

Steve L,
as u have noticed i'm sure, NHSCA Sr Ntls not what it use to be in depth of top talent compared to when it was in Pittsburgh and then Cleveland---- i estimate maybe 1/3 of the top 9 seniors per wt were there 2 months ago, overall.

at one time NHSCA Sr ntls could consistently boast that over 80 % of the NCAA Div I finalists wrestled in that event, i don't think that will prove out in the future. Not close.

Alot of talent in Ohio now, should bode well for future NCAA AA numbers.

re Ironman, once this event goes away as we know it, fans will talk about it for a generation or two. Its held together by a few guys who are getting old. No formal organization or coaches assn or state assn or other bureaucracy created it and sustained it, it has been just a few individuals with a vision. But thats America.

We will talk about Ironman like we talk about the great matches we used to see at NHSCA SR Nationals. Ironman is quickly becoming the place to see the best in the nation regardless of grade wrestle each other.

Look at the talent that was at Ironman this year alone.

29 of the top wrestlers in the nation were here. Thats a little over 25 % of the best wrestlers out there. What's most staggering is the number of 1st team members that were here. 9 out of the top 14 wrestlers in the nation were at this tournament which comes out to be about 64% of the 1st team.

DanR,
plus very good team races too, Ironman is the only tourn where Blair has ever been defeated or even challenged in the last decade. Team race makes wrestlebacks dramatic, every match counts.

i think Scales got screwed with 3rd team ranking at 215. After all he was the last 2 seasons unbeaten in Ohio. ***PLUS took 3rd in FR and 2nd in Greco in Fargo Junior nationals last summer, the nations toughest comp-- the only guy to beat Scales there was Tyrell Fortune who won a Junior College national championship in March.

ASICS # 2 Carson i don't get? only a One time NJ state champion and at that he only wrestled less than half the season this year, was injured from football. Who'd Carson ever beat ? Carson had 2 losses in 2008, what makes him a big deal ?

ASICS # 1 Nelson won NHSCA senior nationals but it wasnt a strong wt there, and who'd he beat ?? --- and like Carson, Nelson only a One time state champ and like Carson, Nelson too has 2 losses in 2008 season. And was only 8th in fargo last summer in the freestyle weight Scales was 3rd in.

so Scales got pinned in the Dapper Dan, many future NCAA champs have lost there, after all its only an exhibition event. The outomes are not to be taken that seriously based on past outcomes ive looked at. Historically, alot of guys show up there not in shape.

looking at overall resume, Scales # 1--- Not a strong wt nationally but no one as much credentials as Scales. Am Wr News has Scales # 1.

I always have felt that the Asics Team has a heavy FS weighing on it more so than others. If that is the case why wouldn't Scales be the best at 215. He got pinned on a bad move at Dapper Dan but did win out at Oklahoma.

Dan u were right, it once did, it used to when Gary Abbott of USA Wr was a key member of the deciding panel, but he isn't any more. i know the 3 guys who do the AA team-- and its Not a nationwide panel --- that make the decisions, and 2 are very knowledgeable. But no longer do Fargo results mean as much.

should Fargo or not ? well for one thing Fargo remains The Only place where many of the nations best compete under one roof, all classes. So imo Fargo still important, but yes i agree can be trumped if a wrestler has other more recent major accomplishments.

Larger issue to me is WHY the 2 guys ahead of Scales are both only ONE time state champs--- and 215 Glen Carson of NJ hasnt done anything outside NJ, in fact only wrestled less than a half season this year. Why would he be # 2 ahead of Scales ?? makes no sense.
