Discussion Topic: Matt Cathell to Kent State?

Per good source posting on thematforums.com, Matt Cathell visited Kent State and is expected to transfer there. Competed once at the Ironman for Caesar Rodney HS in Delaware.
2x NCAA qualifier for Delaware State, a DI institution that disbanded their program.
Should fit in at 149 or 157 for Kent State, which just happen to be two of the weights where Kent struggled the most this past year.
Nice get for Andrassy and the crew.

Kent looks to be really tough next year even losing Lashaway and Big Daddy. They have a nice mix of proven talent (Bedelyon, Mitcheff, Kilgore) as well as a number of young guys who could be very compepetitive right away (Skonieczny, Shuster, Cogar, and Barlow). What is impressive is the depth Andrassy has ready to step in.
125: Bedelyon - Returning All-American
133: Mitcheff - Legit AA candidate
141: Skonieczny - Blue-chip recruit who had a year to learn behind Lashaway
149: Cathell - Legit AA candidate
157: Shuster - Nice redshirt campaign included a win over Nemec.
165: Simpson - Competitive in the MAC
174: Estep - Stepped up and won some matches last year.
184: Kilgore - Legit AA candidate
197: Cogar - Kent had ridiculous depth here last year. Cogar is a horse.
285: Barlow - Barlow was very competitive last year and has had 2 years to prepare with Porter. I think he is an AA candidate.
I count 5 potential All-Americans and guys like Skonieczny, Shuster and Cogar who could have breakout years.

Witt should be a stud backup at 97, too. Kent is in really good shape for next year.

That is a nice lineup for Kent. I love having two stud D1 programs in Ohio. I also have to point out that there are numerous quality backups in the room including Troy Opfer, Marcel Clopton, Sli Bostelman and Keith Witt. All these guys did some good stuff in open events. Also, I think it will be a real battle as to who starts at 157 between Shuster and Tice. Tice was much better than expected last season.

Yes, Kent should be very good. Last year was not a flash in the pan.
Did anyone see the most recent Andrassy interview on Flo? Interesting comments about the dual with OSU, that apparently will not be happening. (as of yet)

Ethan: I haven't seen it yet. I hope Kent and O-state continue to dual. Last time they wrestled at kent there was a terrific crowd. It's a "win-win" for both programs.

How can that match not happen? Like Hank I was looking forward to being in that crowd again this fall when I assumed it would be back in Kent. It was a great show.

Ohio State might not see it that way.

125-Bedlyon dec. Triggas-Bedlyon has won there last two battles convincingly-3-0 Flashes
133-Mitcheff dec. Paddock-The veteran decisions tough freshman. 6-0
141-Hump dec. Skonieczny-Hump has a chance to score bonus but I think it ends up a solid dec. 6-3 Flashes
149-Palmer dec. Cathell-Palmer had a close win at NCAA this year. 6-6
157-Shuster dec. Nemec-Shuster beat him in an open last year. 9-6 Kent.
165-Sponseller dec. Simpson-Colt handled him in the dual. Chance for bonus points. 9-9
174-Rella dec. Estep-Chance for bonus for Rella. 12-9 Bucks.
184-Pucillo dec. Kilgore-A recovering Pucillo beat Kilgore last year in the dual. 15-9 Bucks.
197-Kogar dec. Magrum- Tough to say who wins with both guys being first year starters. Magrum in moving up 2 weights so may have trouble with strong guys, and Kogar fits that billing. 15-12 Bucks.
285-Morrison dec. Barlow-This one is a tossup as Barlow is excellent. 18-12 Bucks.
-If 285 goes to Kent you have a tie. This will be decided by swing matches at 157, 197, and 285. Bonus point may also play a role in the final score.

Scott: My humble opinion re: a dual between Kent and tOSU.
--Hump probably pins or techs Skon.
--I think Nemec is better than Shuster. As I recall, Nemec had beaten him easily a few weeks prior.
--Mitcheff could earn bonus over Paddock (who really knows how good he'll be at this level).
--Barlow v Morrison is probably a toss-up.
