Underdogs blitz Buckeyes; Wrestling falls to Chattanooga 19-16

The Buckeye sports world is being turned upside down and shaken violently.

First, the Ohio State basketball team, fresh off an NCAA finals appearance, lost to an in-state Division 2 also-ran, Findlay. Then the Ohio State football team, undefeated and ranked #1 in the nation, lost against Illinois in a game where our vaunted defense was controlled by a spread offense that kept the Buckeye offense from even coming back onto the field for the final eight plus minutes of the fourth quarter. Now Ohio State wrestling, previously ranked in the top ten in the nation, lost against Chattanooga.

As “Michigan week” looms, the Buckeye nation has been hit with three preemptive haymakers from… umm… who again?

Tom Ryan, Jim Tressel, and Thad Matta are three of the most successful coaches in college sports and are first-class individuals. I have no doubt that the Buckeye nation will continue to back them as much as ever.

But sometimes you just have to ask yourself, “what in the world happened this week?”

Though the loss on the gridiron tore at our collective Buckeye hearts, the wrestling episode in this abominable trilogy was as inexplicable as any.

125: Javier Maldonado (Chattanooga) dec. Nikko Triggas (Ohio State) 7-1

Maldonado, ranked eighth in the nation, is a senior defending conference champion and a national qualifier.

133: Reece Humphrey (Ohio State) dec. Stephen Hromada (Chattanooga) 8-4

Hromada, a senior, has a 10-17 career record.

141: J Jaggers (Ohio State) dec. Cody Cleveland (Chattanooga) 10-7

Cleveland, a sophomore, was 4-7 last year.

149: Joey Knox (Chattanooga) dec. Lance Palmer (Ohio State) 6-3

Knox, a sophomore, was 4-4 last year.

157: Seth Garvin (Chattanooga) dec. Jason Johnstone (Ohio State) 8-7

I must point out a few things here. First, for anyone who wasn’t already an All-American, a final score of 8-7 against Garvin is at least an okay if not good result. He is very tough; so is Victer Crenshaw. However, that having been said, when any athlete puts on a Buckeye uniform and competes, he or she is expected (fairly or unfairly) to be able to be the best of the best every time.

165: Nick Davis (Chattanooga) md. Robel Campbell (Ohio State) 16-6

Davis, a junior, was 0-1 last year.

174: Lloyd Rogers (Chattanooga) dec. Alex Picazo (Ohio State) 11-5

Rogers, a senior, was 9-20 last year. InterMat’s preseason rankings have him at #18 in the nation, while Picazo is unranked.

184: Mike Pucillo (Ohio State) tf. Josh Edmondson (Chattanooga) 18-2, 6:29

Edmondson, a senior, was an NJCAA National Champion last year. Another excellent result for Pucillo.

197: Matt Koz (Chattanooga) md. John Weakley (Ohio State) 11-2

Koz, ranked #11 in the nation at 197 pounds, was a point away from being an All-American last year at heavyweight.

285: J.D. Bergman (Ohio State) pin Matt Letner (Chattanooga) 0:28

Letner is a true freshman.
