Youth leads Bobcats at Ohio University Intrasquad
Dan CosimiNovember 4, 2007
All nine bouts at Ohio University’s annual intrasquad scrimmage were won by wrestlers entering their freshman or sophomore seasons. The Bobcats are a young team with a lot of promise for the future.
125: Mike Wilson tf. Heath Allen 20-6
Wilson, a true sophomore, was a big favorite in this wrestle-off and dominated his way to a 20-6 technical fall over Allen, a true freshman. Unfortunately for the Bobcats, their returning starter, fifth-year senior Caleb Metcalf, will no longer compete as he sustained a career-ending injury. True freshman Nathan Hall will redshirt.
133: Quentin Keyes dec. Seth Morton 2-0
Redshirt freshman Keyes defeated true sophomore Morton by a narrow 2-0 decision. Morton started at 125 pounds last year after Metcalf was injured, so he could use this season to take a redshirt and fill into the higher weight class. It was said that Darrin Boing, a true freshman, defeated Keyes in a close preliminary wrestle-off, but he elected to redshirt this season. True freshman Corbin Boney will redshirt.
141: Germane Lindsey tf. Mike Fennell 21-6
In a battle between two true freshmen, Lindsey, an Ohio Division 1 state champion a last year, defeated Fennell, a New York state placer and NHSCA Junior All-American. If Lindsey stays healthy, Fennell could redshirt this season.
149: Clay Tucker dec. Kevin Christensen 3-1
Tucker, a redshirt sophomore, will again start here as he defeated Christensen, a true sophomore who had a 6-2 record in spot starts last year. Redshirt freshman Brian Connelly will help provide depth and true freshmen Matt Reedy and Adam Vaccari will redshirt.
157: Tommy Weinkam dec. Kent Smith 3-1
This weight class will spark some interesting debate. NCAA qualifier and returning starter Jake Freirichs was defeated in a preliminary wrestle-off by Smith, who then was defeated by Weinkam. Freirichs, a junior, and Smith, a sophomore, have both taken redshirt years. Weinkam is a true freshman. Freirichs is proven at this level though, and that may make a big difference in determining who starts here. True freshman Gabe Garcia will redshirt.
165: Jake Ison dec. Anthony Ciraky 4-0
Redshirt sophomore Ison, the Bobcats leader in wins last year, will again start at this weight class after blanking redshirt freshman Ciraky in this wrestle-off. Ciraky, a NHSCA Junior Finalist in high school, will provide very good depth here.
174: Nick Purdue dec. Ryan Knapp 6-2
This was one of the most anticipated bouts of the day as it faced off a fifth-year senior against a true freshman. This time, the youngster got the upper hand as Purdue, a two-time Ohio D3 state champion, defeated Knapp, a two-time state finalist from Columbus DeSales’ class of 2003. Purdue might still redshirt despite the outcome. Another former state finalist, redshirt freshman Cody VanBuskirk, will provide depth.
184: Erik Schuth dec. Antione Love 5-3
True freshman Schuth’s victory over Love, a senior, was the most surprising result of the scrimmage. Schuth was a New York state champion last year, while Love was a starter for the Bobcats at 174 pounds last year after being a two-time NJCAA All-American. True freshman Aaron Schecter will redshirt.
197: Tim Samson dec. Dan Herres 5-2
In a battle of freshmen, Samson defeated Herres in the wrestle-off at 197 pounds. True freshmen Chris Iammarino and Justin Powell are both listed to be competing at this weight class on the roster, but neither wrestled in this event. Powell is currently slated to start here this season. Herres, who took a year off from the sport before transferring in as a walk-on, and Iammarino, will redshirt along with true freshmen Zach Star and Kevin LaJudice.
285: Jason Marshall won by default
Marshall is the Bobcats’ only heavyweight currently able to compete because true freshman Andy Hartshorn sustained an injury that will require him to get his knee scoped. Marshall is excellent, but having no depth here will be a problem if Marshall gets injured.
