Whether you and your family celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or just the ability to sleep-in for a few days, winter vacation is a special time.
But this winter break was a bit more special for the Notre Dame College wrestling program.
First, Adam Koballa, a two-time state champion at St. Peter Chanel High School in Bedford, transferred in from Old Dominion University. Soon after, Thomas Straughn, a two-time state champion from Perry High School in Massillon, transferred in from Edinboro University.

In a gym filled with fans, there could not have been a better ticket in town in all of Northwest Ohio. Four solid Division 3 programs met up at Elmwood High School for an early season battle. Tiffin Calvert, Attica Seneca East, and Harrod Allen East all made the trip to Royal Country to test their team’s early-season mettle. The most anticipated match of the night was between two state-ranked squads, Calvert and Elmwood. Both teams were returning a lot from teams that finished in the top five at the Owens Community College district and in the number two and three positions for this year’s Division 3 State Duals, set to take place at Evergreen High School in Metamora next month.

The Buckeye sports world is being turned upside down and shaken violently.
First, the Ohio State basketball team, fresh off an NCAA finals appearance, lost to an in-state Division 2 also-ran, Findlay. Then the Ohio State football team, undefeated and ranked #1 in the nation, lost against Illinois in a game where our vaunted defense was controlled by a spread offense that kept the Buckeye offense from even coming back onto the field for the final eight plus minutes of the fourth quarter. Now Ohio State wrestling, previously ranked in the top ten in the nation, lost against Chattanooga.
As “Michigan week” looms, the Buckeye nation has been hit with three preemptive haymakers from… umm… who again?

Practice began for the Buckeyes on September 10th. Our pre-season ran from September 10th to October 21st. During this time there was a heavy emphasis on several areas of our student-athletes development which include strength, conditioning, mental toughness, team unity and basic technical skills. We also spent a lot of time with our freshman class in assisting them with the sometimes difficult transition from high school to college life. We brought in several motivational speakers such as Chris Spielman to talk to our team about the importance of leadership and good decision making skills.

Buckeyes and Notre Dame to Battle on November 4 at Maple Heights
Wrestling junkies looking for an early season fix should plan to head to Maple Heights High School on Sunday, November 4, at 2:00 p.m., to watch the Ohio State Buckeyes battle the Falcons of Notre Dame College. It’s a great opportunity to see some spectacular wrestlers in action including Ohio State’s four returning All-Americans: J Jaggers, Lance Palmer, Mike Pucillo and J.D. Bergman. The eighth-ranked Buckeyes also feature several other terrific wrestlers including Alex Picazo, T.J. Enright, Reece Humphrey, and Jason Johnstone. In addition, several members of their fabulous freshman class — Nikko Triggas, Sean Nemec, John Weakley — might also take the mat. The Bucks’ trip north is a rare opportunity for fans from northeastern Ohio to get a look at one of the fastest rising powers in the division one collegiate ranks. It’s also a chance to see the Ohio State coaching staff up-close, including recent freestyle world championship placewinners, Tom Rowlands and Joe Heskett.
